The HyPilot project aims to demonstrate how Hystar’s electrolyzer can dramatically reduce the cost of green hydrogen production
•ABB’s outstanding power supply products increase the accuracy of voltage and current control to simulate a wide range of operating conditions
ABB is providing key power technical support for the HyPilot Green Hydrogen project, a megawatt-class container PEM electrolyser field demonstration project by Hystar Norway, to verify the effectiveness of Hystar technology under real field conditions. Delivered in the fourth quarter of 2023, the project will be commissioned at the Gassco operated Karstø gas processing plant in Rogaland, Norway. ABB is working with Norwegian oil company Equinor, Yara International and Norwegian Gas Transport Management (Gassco) on the high-profile project.
ABB low harmonic insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) rectifiers and DC-DC converte330500-01-04 rs are used to regulate the power supply to the electrolyzer. ABB provided technical services and expert support on-site in Norway throughout the project.
Operators will collect data during the 10,000-hour trial to prove that green hydrogen can be produced in a cost-effective and reliable way using renewable energy sources such as wind power, but the intermittency of renewable energy needs to be solved. The results of the HyPilot project will show that Hystar’s electrolyzer can reduce the cost of large-scale industrial production of green hydrogen, while also providing performance data in a variety of operating conditions, confirming the viability of long-term commercial operations.
Chris Poynter, global president of the System Drive business unit at ABB Motion Control, said: “The electrolytic cell power supply system on the one hand significantly reduces the harmonic content and footprint of the grid, on the other hand effectively improves efficiency and power factor. This helps to reduce the levelised cost of green hydrogen production, which is a key factor in accelerating the adoption of this application. ABB stands for productivity in a low-carbon society, and we are proud to work closely with Hystar and other stakeholders to leverage our domain expertise330500-01-04 and technology to help build a new hydrogen ecosystem.”
Fredrik Mowill, CEO of Hystar, said: “The HyPilot project brings together the industry players behind Hystar’s ultra-efficient electrolyzer patents and is an important milestone for the green hydrogen industry. ABB’s significant contribution to this project will enable us to conduct rigorous testing under a range of conditions, facilitating the widespread application of large-scale green hydrogen production.”
