ABB’s Fossil Free Steel report highlights new methods and technologies in Brazil, China, India, Sweden and the United States
The ABB report explores the topic: The Development path of fossil-free steel
ABB has released a report exploring carbon capture, hydrogen and electrochemistry as the main ways to decarbonize steel production. The report highlights innovative approaches and new technological developments in fossil-free steel in Brazil, China, India, Sweden and the United States, and includes insights from leading global steelmakers such as SSAB, Tata Steel and Aperam, as well as experts from the American Steel Technology Association and ABB.
The path to fossil-free steel
The steel industry accounts for about 8% of total global energy demand and 3500/15-02-00-00 7-9% of global CO2 emissions – most of which come from burning coal. ABB’s new report, The Path to Fossil-Free Steel – How to Achieve a Sustainable Future, explores current decarbonisation challenges, including the cost and complexity of the transition to low-carbon technologies and access to hydrogen energy, clean electricity, high-grade iron ore, fossil-free carbon and lime.
“Regulatory, commercial and social drivers are accelerating the decarbonisation of the steel industry, but to address the core challenge identified in the ABB report, phasing out fossil fuels, the steel industry needs strong integrated solutions and collaboration at all levels of the global steel supply chain to succeed.”
Through cooperation, a digital, autonomous and fossil-free steel industry can be achiev3500/15-02-00-00 ed. ABB is taking a collaborative and collaborative approach to integrating innovative technologies with ABB’s existing product portfolio for the steel industry. Across the globe, the steel industry is committed to a sustainable future, and several promising technologies are being implemented. Through innovation and cooperation, green steel has a future.
