DS200LDCCH1AGA Compact packaging machines and even distributed bottling plants have varying degrees of cover, baffle or gate, or sometimes only protective devices. The machine masks all levels of risk. Packers must consider these risks as required by law. That’s why, in addition to protecting people, our solutions are designed to guarantee the flexibility and productivity of packaging machines. We believe that a secure automation solution is the key to success.
Pilz’s complete solutions for the packaging industry combine products from our portfolio of sensor and control technologies. These products are combined with the rest of the control element family and our software solutions. They can be individually assembled for all packaging types in the industry (primary, secondary or line end packaging). This is the case for our security solutions for secondary packaging, for example. In this area, a product (such as a bottle) already has its primary packaging and is receiving its outer packaging. It could be a cardboard box – especially the cardboard feed is potentially dangerous. We use TUV SUD-certified solutions consisting of photoelectric sensors and Pilz controllers to ensure this process step. In other words, we monitor the material intake so that if the cardboard intake port is empty, people will no longer be injured. So that the operator can access the feed area. Our evaluation units in this solution – the small controller PNOZmulti 2 or the modular safety relay myPNOZ – enable safe shutdown in the event of a hazard.
Industrial information security as a second role
Industrial information security is also part of our portfolio of solutions. Pilz specialiDS200LDCCH1AGA ses in comprehensive access and rights management and data protection. On top of that, if packaging plants are very extensive and complex, it can be difficult to get a comprehensive overview of them. This is why security access and permission allocation must be a safety-related issue for such plants. With our solution PITmode fusion, modular operating mode selection and access rights system, we not only ensure security, but also complete industrial information security tasks. This means that operators can only make interventions that correspond to their personal level of authority. As a result, the final product is difficult to tamper with, reducing misuse and manipulation and improving product safety.
As for the protection of the data itself, our SecurityBridge Industrial firewall can also provide protection and establish the necessary security for pharmaceutical and food packaging.
“Total Safety” for combustion furnaces
I would like to introduce the topic of “burner management” with a brief description of Wafer production. Gas burners in the wafer oven must be safely controlled and monitored. The ignition process alone consists of nearly 20 separate steps: minimum and maximum gas pressure, suction function, compliance with the maximum allowable temperature, and much more to be monitored during firing.
Such machines have a complex control sequence. Therefore, the burner management system for the automatic operation of combustion furnaces and burner systems has a complex structure. Safety is an essential component because the potential hazard is high and strict safety regulations must be followed in order to avoid the presence of unburned fuel in the combustion chamber.
Burners play for maximum safety
Pilz has a fail-safe burner management system specifically designed for these requirements. Our systDS200LDCCH1AGA em solution includes the base unit PNOZm B1 Burner in the configurable small controller PNOZmulti 2, with the addition of expansion modules if necessary. The solution can not only control and monitor the burner itself, but also monitor and safely control the entire burner simultaneously, as well as control various burner types such as master or slave burner, direct or indirect ignition, and low or high temperature operation.
How do we do this? Our burner function blocks simulate the advanced functions of electronic automatic burner control systems in flexible configuration. Thanks to the diversity of technologies – i.e., safety, diverse relay outputs – we achieve maximum safety (i.e., safety rating up to PL e) when controlling the safety valve of the burner.
Worldwide cross-industry applications are possible
What is important is the potential application of our solutions on a global scale. We know that manufacturers of burners and thermal processing equipment and machinery have a large number of international legal and regulatory requirements to consider. Our safety solutions meet these requirements in many parts of the world: by complying with European standards, confirmed by TUV-SUD, and also certified by UL, the global testing organization in the USA and Canada, or AGA, the Australian Gas Association.
Our safe burner management systems are already used in the widest range of sectors: in the metalworking, food and confectionery industries, such as Buhler Haas, a manufacturer of wafer ovens, as well as in sugar cane or ethanol production, paper or automotive. Especially when we look at petrochemical or gas processing, it is now even more important not to waste energy and to avoid any further harm from energy.
