The 8516-039 TG-13 Die-cast aluminum mechanical hydraulic retarder controls the API611 steam turbine to drive pumps, compressors or generators that do not require synchronous (constant speed) operation. The governor senses the turbine rotor speed through an input drive shaft, compares this speed to an internal speed set point, and then controls the turbine intake steam flow using a rotating output shaft connected to the turbine speed-regulating valve.

Woodward TG-13 and TG-17 are mechanical hydraulic speed reducers used to control steam turbines that do not require synchronous (constant speed) operation.

The maximum end shaft travel of the TG-13 and TG-17 governors is 40 degrees. The recommended travel from no-load to full-load position is 2/3 of the full travel of the governor. For a graphical representation of the maximum operating capacity of the governor and related information about the governor terminal shaft travel, see Figure 1-1.

Governor output is provided through serrated terminal shafts extending from both sides of the housing. The size of the internal pump of the governor allows operation within the standard speed range: • 1100 to 2400 rpm • 2400 to 4000 rpm • 4000 to 6000 rpm TG-13 governor operates at 1034 kPa (150 psi) internal oil pressure, The TG-17 operates at an internal oil pressure of 1379 kPa (200 psi). Each governor is set to the speed range specified by the customer when ordering. In some applications, high speed governors (4000 to 6000 rpm) may require heat exchangers (see the end of Chapter 2, When do I Need a heat exchanger? Both governors can be controlled below the specified speed range, but the output torque and performance will be lost.
