Door and housing expansion monitors have been carefully designed for high reliability, specifically for the plant’s most critical rotating machinery. This 1-slot monitor seamlessly integrates with other AMS 6500 monitors to form a comprehensive API 670 mechanical protection monitor.

Applications of the monitor cover a wide range of industries, including steam, gas, compressor and hydraulic turbomachinery.

Main functions:
Valve and housing expansion monitors are mainly used for:

Accurate monitoring of valve position: It continuously tracks the position of the main steam inlet valve stem, usually shown as the percentage open. This measurement provides valuable insights into the current load of the turbine, helping the operator make informed decisions.
Protect machinery reliably: By comparing monitoring parameters to preset alarm setpoints, the monitor triggers alarms and relays when necessary, ensuring the safety and integrity of machinery.
Case extended monitoring:
Housing expansion monitoring involves the use of two inductive displacement sensors (LVDTS), which are typically mounted axially and parallel to the shafts on either side of the turbine housing. Unlike non-contact sensors such as eddy current sensors, inductive sensors make physical contact.

This monitoring is particularly important during start-up, as it allows both sides of the turbine housing to be monitored to ensure proper expansion rates. Failure to do so can cause the turbine to “stick” and the housing to bend, potentially causing the rotor to collide with the housing.

Channel configuration:
Channel 1: Capable of measuring static values (such as housing expansion) and dynamic quantities (such as displacement, Angle, force, torsion) or other physical measurements obtained from inductive sensors.
Channel 2: reserved for static measurement and relative displacement with respect to channel 1.
The AMS 6500 Mechanical Health monitor is seamlessly integrated into PlantWeb®, combining with Ovation® and DeltaV™ process control systems to provide operations with integrated mechanical health information.
