PXI module

The PXI standard defines the mechanical dimensions and connector forms for both 3U and 6U modules. 3U module A lifting handle is installed at the bottom of the module. The top and bottom are fixed by screws, and the bottom fixing screw is partially hidden in the help handle. A module occupying more than one slot can be secured using more than two screws. Two connectors (J1, J2) can be installed, but if the module does not require the functionality of the J2 connector (64-bit PCI and PXI features), this connector may not be installed in order to reduce costs.

The 6U module is mounted with two pull handles and two connectors (J1, J2). Installation of any other connector (defined as J3, J4, J5) is outside the specification and may create mechanical and electrical compatibility issues. The screws for fixing are installed at the top and bottom of the module and are partially hidden in the pull-out handle. A module occupying more than one slot can be secured using more than two screws.

All locking devices should be kept securely adjusted, especially for modules that require good grounding. The front panel ground must be isolated from the PXI power supply ground to avoid ground loop current. The performance description of all modules refers to the condition that all screws are locked.

PXI 1 slot, system slot

The leftmost slot of the chassis is reserved for system controllers. This slot contains a set of connectors connected to the backplane and is nominally one slot. However, in practice, a controller may need to occupy more than one slot, so the standard allows the space of one slot to be expanded to the left (away from other peripheral modules) in the chassis. A typical chassis may contain three controller expansion slots, which together provide space for a total of four slots for the controller, but use only one set of backplane connectors. The controller expansion slot does not have a backplane connector.

An embedded controller can be installed in slot 1 of the PXI chassis, or an interface module can be installed to connect an external controller (such as a computer). A typical interface module is based on a dedicated serial interface that connects the external controller to the module in the chassis with copper or optical cables. The interface operates like a PCI-to-PCI bridge and is transparent to the system software. The PCI interface card in the controller sends serial signals while the PXI interface card in the chassis decodes the data and transmits it to the PCI bus.
