Nor is this a new phenomenon. In business computing, the shift from mainframes to personal computers is a recent example of this phenomenon.

This is why users need to conduct independent research, look beyond existing suppliers, and clearly set manufacturing, productivity, and quality goals before starting the search for a solution.

Further complicating this dilemma is the fact that the industrial automation industry has yet to fully embrace open architecture systems with the ability to accelerate in business and personal life. Some organizations are working to change that. The Open Process Automation Forum Initiative is one such group working to promote change. Don Bartusiak, a principal engineer at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering, expressed his experience with users frustrated by the lack of an open ecosystem for industrial automation applications. “Just think about how much value you get from all the third-party apps that you can load onto your smartphone,” Bartusiak said. “In our world, we can’t do things like that.” He further describes how closed ecosystems in today’s industrial automation systems force users to make significant compromises on projects. This is because a closed ecosystem limits the user’s ability to choose the “best” solution and instead limits the user to scenarios where they can only choose between existing vendor compatible applications. In contrast, smartphone users can pick and choose from a large number of competing apps that best suit their needs. More distressingly, Bartusiak points out that many times, users can’t just write an automation and control application and run it directly on any vendor’s system. In closed ecosystems, applications may need to be written multiple times depending on the system.
