The S800 I/O is a comprehensive, distributed, modular process I/O system that communicates with the parent controller and PLC via an industry-standard fieldbus. The TB840 ModuleBus modem is the Optical interface of the Optical ModuleBus. The TB840A is used in a redundant configuration where each module is connected to a different optical ModuleBus line, but connected to the same electrical ModuleBus.

The ModuleBus modem has electrical and optical Modulebus interfaces, which are logically the same bus. Up to 12 I/O modules can be connected to an electrical ModuleBus and up to 7 clusters can be connected to an optical fiber ModuleBus. Optical fiber interfaces are used for the local distribution of I/O clusters and when more than 12 I/O modules are required in I/O stations.
